Pet Tax

In 2017 the Punjab government, a state in Northern India, introduced a tax for keeping domestic animals. People owning a dog, cat, pig, sheep, or deer as a domestic animal have to pay a fee of Rs. 250 per year. For a buffalo, bull, camel, horse, cow, or elephant, the tax goes up to Rs. 500 per year.

In Punjab, the Department of Local Government says, ‘A person must not keep a dog that is older than three months unless such person acquired an annual registration for the dog and has paid the annual registration fee.’ Also, the Punjab government microchips all registered animals and issues them a ‘branding code.
